SOLD The Embroideries at Hardwick Hall * £40 €65 $125 Including Shipping (New Zealand, Australia or remote areas $140)

This is the complete full-colour illustrated catalogue of all the embroideries at Bess of Hardwick's hall in Derbyshire, authored by the doyenne of needlework historians, Santina Levey.
Mostly commissioned by Bess (the redoubtable Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury and sometime keeper and gossip of Mary Queen of Scots), the collection of late 16h century embroidery, needlework and linen wrought at Hardwick Hall is a prodigious survival.
The pieces fully described here are modest sized panels embroidered with silks and gold threads as well as huge wall hangings depicting heroic women of the ancient world.
The descriptions are meticulous and fascinating
as are the fabulous photographs of all the pieces.
This is a 400 page full size hardback book in perfect condition.
