This last German sampler book this week is from the 1980s. It is hardback with German text and over 100 pages
This volume catalogues 128 samplers in the Bavarian Museums in South Germany. The majority of samplers is from Munich or South Germany, but there are some North German exemplars also.
Because this book is over 30 years old, not all the illustrations are in colour, there are many black and white photographs.
One of the reasons I bought this book was because there is a ghost of a Boxer motif appearing on a North German sampler of from the first half of the 18th century. The Boxer figure is incongruously placed and something of a puzzle still to be solved.
The book is prefaced by a description of stitching practices and early German pattern books.
The inside of this book is in pristine condition, but the jacket, though complete and without tears, has some wear.
