SOLD Historical Needlework of Pennsylvania * £20 €30 $50 Shipping Included (New Zealand/Australia $60)
This first edition hardback book of 1968 is in very nice condition and provides a full and detailed history of the needlework of Pennsylvania.
Not only are there beautiful samplers - a few in colour, more in black and white, but lovely examples of Dresden work, brought over from Continental Europe by the early immigrants to the USA. It is interesting to see labelled as Dresden-type work, what we in the UK call Hollie-Point.
Pennsylvania needlework is famous for the Westtown Quaker samplers - you can see examples here as well as work from lesser known Quaker schools such as Fallsington Boarding School in Bucks County.
Many of us have seen images of Westtown globes, but how many images of mounted globes have we seen - these are very rare indeed.
There are some lovely examples of flame-stitched wallets and pockets shown.
Also domestic embroidery including show towels and table-cloths.
The book has a lovely linen cover with a bright decorative border at the top.
