Editable files on MACs - help please
I'm afraid the Cross Stitcher designer programs don't work on MACs. If anyone knows of an inexpensive cross stitch designer program that will run on MAC perhaps you could let me know please, I so don't want MAC users to lose out.

I have been using Macs for over 10 years and have not found a cross stitch programme, I have Jane's programme and run it on the children's pc, not an ideal solution but it works. Would be very pleased to find a mac-compatible programme!

Thank you for your comments - I am particulary interested that you can run PC based software on a MAC - can you say a little more about how that is done, please, that would be really helpful.
ReplyDeleteI use MacStitch. I have an older version that I like very much and just installed it on my new 24" IMac that runs Leopord. I used to use PC Stitch on my Mac and run it on a virtual windows platform, but it blew up all the time. If I had to use a PC I would recommend PC stitch, but I am a Mac lover and won't change back now. The newest MacStitch is available for $60 online and comes with a lot more features than my old tried and true copy.
ReplyDeleteI do the same as Tanya. I have a Mac with an Intel processor and use Parallels to run Windows XP. There are a couple of other ways to run Windows on a Mac, but Parallels is the program I chose to make it happen. It lets me run Windows so I can use programs like Pattern Maker Pro for fun as well as run applications that we use in my school district (I'm a technology specialist). It works really well!

On my macbook pro I have installed VM Ware which is a system which makes installation of windows xp pro possible. At the apple store, they told me this was better for the hard drive than doing a dual boot, which you can also do to run windows. This way I am able to go back and forth to mac and windows and thus run windows-only programs. I do have a pc desktop which I use most the windows program on but it's nice to have the option on the mac laptop. Good luck!

Mac Stitch 2009 - by Ursa
I am a die hard Mac user since the very first one hit the market (even though I have a PC in my home as well). I don't think most mac users will have the "ability" to get their Macs to run PC based software. Depending on which Mac they have, it could require new software and/or new hardware which would make it not so feasible just for one cross stitch design.
ReplyDeleteMac users can easily run (free) PC Stitch Pattern Viewer on any Mac, but of course that does not give us the option to doodle with the design so the design could just as easily come in .pdf format. MacStitch (in the above comments) is the ONLY Mac based design program for cross stitch, the most recent version requires OSX (which is not on very old Macs). MacStitch has all the program options of PC Stitch plus several extra goodies most notably advantageous to you, the ability to convert 6 or 7 other design software files into MacStitch without having to rework them much or at all.
I have been using MacStitch for about 3 years and, after one finally gives up their memories of PC stitch, find it a very user friendly and versatile program, well worth the not over large investment. They also have an extremely good customer service department that I have called upon several times. MacStitch is made by Ursa Software and they also make the PC compatible WinStitch, both have free 'viewers' available. Here is a link to the Ursa site.
Being the die hard Mac user that I am I would love to see this design produced in MacStitch and hope that you will consider the idea.
If you would e-mail me I will give you a further bit of information that I really can not divulge in this venue but do believe you might find useful because of the nature of this project.
This is not an advertisment, but I do suppose it is an endorsement for MacStitch. I am just a real live stitcher working the Mary Wigham Forever SAL and a devoted Mac user.
I have Mac Stitch '08 that I run on my Mac. I've just begun to use it this past half a year or so and am learning how to use it. So far, I am enjoying it, I just wish it came with more instructional materials.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how it compares to the PC program but I have heard stories of folks who have run windows on their Macs and it caused their computers to crash. For that reason, I wouldn't use a PC program, but if you come out with something compatible with Mac Stitch, I will definitely be interested in purchasing it.
Thanks for thinking of us Mac users! :)
