Snippets of Cloth, Snippets of History is the title of this full size, French language paperback book in pristine condition. Its 200+ pages document the textile heritage of Nimes in the South of France.
For the main part, this is a book of cloth samples - embroidered and woven and you can see a good many pages
like the one above. I was astonished and delighted to see these pre- French Revolution hand-embroidered samples for gentlemen's waistcoats set out for customer choice - for some reason, it had not occurred to me that there would be so much choice!
Women had their choice of beautiful cloths too, for their skirts and gilets - and for shoes.
There are details of patterns and weaves
and many pages of snippets like the page below, showing the patterned cloths in all their variety.
There is a comprehensive glossary of terms used in the fabrication of Nimois textiles. If you love the history of textiles, you will love this book.
