The two books this time are Patterns of Childhood by Rebecca Quinton of Glasgow Museums and Samplers and Tapestry Embroideries by Marcus Huish. Patterns of Childhood is an A5 softback of 96 pages
in near perfect condition.
It was published in 2005 to describe samplers exhibited in Glasgow and what an exhibition that was. I arrived the day before opening to find the walls being painted a wonderful apple green - just the right colour to set off the jewel-like samplers. There are not that many spot motif samplers with characters and the one above with a lady or perhaps a representation of Flora is a corker.
Glasgow has a considerable number of early samplers in the museums' collections and here you can see some of the early band samplers.
The multiplication table stitched on samplers appears to be a Scottish phenomenon - but perhaps you know something different - I'd be keen to hear.
This A5 softback of 176 pages is also in very good condition.
It is another classic of sampler and needlework documentation and essential for the reference shelf.
There are 101 pieces illustrated, 8 are in colour and the rest in black and white.
