Subtitled Sampler and Needlework Students and Teachers in Portsmouth, New Hampshire 1741-1840 this is the absorbing book it promises to be with a huge wealth of detail about the personal lives, histories and works of teachers and girls.
There are many samplers illustrated in colour and black and white
The book is in good clean condition with over 150 pages
In addition to sampler illustrations, there are pages taken from historical archives
above you can see the 1808 list of teaching staff at the academy kept by the Revd Timothy Alden, Junior, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
I was particularly interested to see an account of guardianship for Sarah P Horney and discover just how much was spent educating and furnishing a girls for education in the early 1800s.
