Interesting Embroideries for Auction Soon


There are some wonderful embroidered items coming up for auction soon - all over the world! The first item is for auction on 1 October and is Lot 2088 at James D Julia of Maine, USA. It is an early American silk-embroidered sailor's blouse thought to date circa 1830-1840.

This Summer weight jumper is totally hand stitched. The blue trimmed panels have fabulous silk designs applied most likely by a sailor at sea.

On 29 September at the Autograph Auction in Malaga is Lot 311 another embroidered, working man's suit - belonging to Antonio Ordonez a Spanish Bullfighter, a close friend of Ernest Hemingway and the subject of the novelist`s work The Dangerous Summer While I'll never be a fan of bullfighting, I cannot but admire the fabulous stitching and gold work on these suits - they appear to be clothes of kings. In Berlin at the Historia Auktionhaus is this extraordinary artist's doll having a stuffed cloth body with ceramic hands and head with wig, plaster feet, wearing elaborately embroidered dress of the 18th Century. It is Lot 5039 for auction on 21 September - click here for more details.

  1. Those sailors did some amazing needlework on their clothes. There are also embroidered trousers in musuems that they made in their day off (Sunday they got time to make do and mend) and the woolies that they stitched of their ships aren't bad either.
