Wallada - The Poetess Who Embroidered Her Skirts * Free Jigsaw Download

The subject of our Jigsaw Download this week is Wallada (1011-1091). She was the daughter of Muhammad III of Córdoba, one of the last Umayyad Cordoban caliphs. Not only was she considered a great beauty, she was famous for her intelligence and skill as a poet - and a certain wayward recklessness - she walked out in public without a hijab. Perhaps more interesting to us, she was known for wearing her verses embroidered on her clothing. Whether she embroidered them herself or whether they were made for her, we do not know. In this image of her which hangs in the Casa Sefarad in Cordoba she is pictured wearing her verses on a panel worn around her neck. In my mind's eye, I had always pictured her verses fluttering around her hem. Who knows? Sew Daily have a pattern to make a simple embroidered skirt - but maybe you have other designs in mind now?
