Samplers At Auction
It seems to me that there has been a dearth of samplers at auction this winter - perhaps because winter-time isn't the best time for selling, when everyone would prefer to be snug at home rather than waiting in a draughty auction room. Anyone for mulled wine? But I rather took a shine to this pair of samplers coming up for auction next week. The first is to be sold by High Road Auctions at Chiswick in London on 12 March 2013. It is Lot 47 and is a framed 18th century example with floral and geometric decoration, worked by Elizabeth Atkinson in 1765. At first I thought there was a lose thread trapped in lower middle portion, but on closer inspection this green strand is a division mark between two texts - see the detail image below. The estimate for this sampler is £80 - £120. For more details, click here.
The second sampler (below) is Lot 550 for auction at Capes Dunn, Manchester on 12 March 2013. It is a William IV sampler with ten rows of text within a floral silkwork garland and is signed Mary Proctor`s work aged 12 years 1836. It measures 16" x17" (40.6 x 43.2cm) approximately and is in a later gilt frame. The estimate for this sampler is £80 - £120. For more details, click here.
