This magnificent Spanish sampler will be in the Micheal and Elizabeth Feller Collection Volume II. It has an inscription which we would like to check out - if there is a Spanish volunteer to help. The inscription reads either: lo hizo rosa ibanez discipula de maria valcedo en la enseña or discipula de maria valcedo en la enseña lo hizo rosa ibanez.
There is also the Christagram IHS on one side and on the other side the combined intials MA - does this MA signify Maria? (Mary) We shall be very grateful indeed for your help. Just click on the flying angel or leave a comment. Thank you very much.

"lo hizo rosa ibanez discipula de maria valcedo en la enseña" roughly translates as "Made by Rosa Ibanez, student of Maria Valcedo, in school". Hope this is helpful!
ReplyDeleteMy Spanish is very rudimentary, but roughly it translates to my name is Rosa Ibanez taught by Maria Valcedo. Ensena means insignia, not sure how to work that into the sentence though.Hope that helps...

ReplyDeleteThank you so much Else - if you click on the flying angel and send me your address, we'll send you a free copy of the new book in which we'll acknowledge your help.
ReplyDeleteCould MA be for "Ave Maria"? Just a guess.
ReplyDeleteThis sampler is wonderful.
The "AM" is probably for "Ave Maria."
ReplyDeleteI agree, AM probably stands for Holy Mary, and the embroidery may reflect the emblem belonging to one of the numerous "fraternities" in Spain.
ReplyDeleteHave a look here, it's the same sort of coat of arms:

btw, I can't see the inscription photo anywhere...

ReplyDeleteIt means "It was made by Rosa Ibáñez, Maria Valcedo's pupil, in the school (or "in the class").
ReplyDelete"Enseña", in Spanish, means "flag", but it doesn't make much sense in this contexts.
So I think it can be an abreviation of "enseñanza" ("teaching"). But I'm not sure. :)
"AM" means "Ave María".
I love this sampler.
"he aquí que hizó Rosa Ibáñez discipula de maria valcedo en La Enseña o discipula de maria valcedo en La Enseña Lo hizo"
ReplyDeleteHecho por Rosa Ibañez, discipula de María Valcedo en la Insignia (puede ser el nombre de la escuela de bordado). Las letras "AM" son evidentemente "Ave María"
By Rosa Ibañez, disciple of Mary Valcedo in the Insignia (can be the name of the school of embroidery). The letters "AM" are obviously "Ave Maria"
The literal translation will be "Made by Rosa Ibañez , disciple of Maria Salcedo".
ReplyDeletelo hizo rosa ibanez discipula de maria valcedo en la enseña or discipula de maria valcedo en la enseña lo hizo rosa ibanez:
ReplyDeleteI made it: Rosa Ibanez, under the guidance or schooling of Maria Valcedo, within the standard: I made it, Rosa Ibanez
(I lived in Costa Rica (Central America) as an exchange student.)
I asked my Spanish teacher, and she reckons in this context that ensena means school - so Maria Valcedo was the dame.
ReplyDeleteThank you all very much for your help - you are amazing!
