One of My Favourite Images - Fritz von Uhde
I think this has to be one of the happiest images I know - painted by Fritz von Uhde, a Saxon painter who studied Fine Arts in Dresden - it is called The Nursery. Immediately, when I look at it, I am in the shoes of the girl sitting at the window. I remember how important I felt when first given some of the laundry basket items for mending. No longer a little child, playing with dolls, but engaged in grown-up tasks. It was a rite of passage. It may be that the girl here is stitching or mending clothes for the copious wardrobe enjoyed by all the dolls in the scene

I agree, it would be a lovely place to spend the day.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen this one, but if I had, it would already have been one of my favorites. I do like it, and I identify with the mom who has three daughters and when one by one they wanted to use the needle or crochet hook like me. thanks for sharing,

love this and would like to own at least a print of it.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see this, does remind me of our household with 5 girls and mother, sewing, mending and the odd sampler embroidery, a lovely start in life for us.
