Rare French Sampler at Rosebery Auction and More
This rare and exciting French sampler dated 1795 is for auction at Roseberys of London on 10 November 2012. Surrounding the central basket of flowers are various embroidered pastoral scenes harking back to a pre-revolution idyll, including and lady and gentleman in a cornfield, a river scene, shepherdess and sheep, a couple in an arbour, a sequin decorated cornucopia, insects, flora and fruit, framed and glazed. It measures 44cm x 46cm and is Lot 628 with an estimate of £500 - £700. For more details click here.
Also at Roseberys on 10 November is Lot 627 - a fabulous needlework sampler by Martha Grubb dated 1796 depicting a house, the windows decorated with mica window panes flanked to either side by a lady and gentleman, flora and fauna including birds, dogs, a stag, squirrels and insects. It is framed and glazed and measures 38cm x 48cm and comes with an estimate of £500 - £700. For more details click here.
Lot 227 at the Cotswold Auction Company's sale on 20 November is this very interesting George III needlework sampler. It is inscribed: Ann Lewis, Her Work Wrought at Mrs Lees in Dewsbury, Yorkshire in the Year of Our Lord 1798, age 12 Years...., A prayer is worked amongst the various motifswhich include birds of Paradise, Adam and Eve beside the Tree of Life, angels, swans and a royal crest to the top. Dewsbury is just south of Bradford, my home town, so i know the place well. It was famous at this time for the production of shoddy and mungo - a form of recycled cloth made by ripping up old fabrics and reprocessing them. Dewsbury is also the town where Branwell Bronte, brother to the famous Bronte sisters, was a curate for some time at the beginning of the 19th century.
