Catherine Carr - Crochet in Glass

While on one of our regular trips north, we stopped off for lunch and an afternoon stroll in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Lunch is excellent and is heartily recommended - as are the contents of the Park's shop. If you have yet to settle Christmas gifts and are at a loss, just visit this shop for brilliant craft items. Here we saw the work of Catherine Carr who crochets and knits with glass. Each piece is individually knitted or crocheted by hand. Then the items are heated and manipulated through several firings at a very high temperature, eventually emerging as a formed glass vessel. Note to self: best not try this at home without tuition!
Because of this hand crafted process, all the pieces are original and individual with no two being exactly the same.
By applying these traditional skills to an innovative process of recycled glass products, Catherine produces beautiful and delicate lace structures in which each individual stitch can be seen and where the openwork design casts striking dappled shadows. Inspired by the role of women in textiles, especially her grandmother who taught her these fading skills and bequeathed her the patterns used, she hopes to celebrate the history, memories and skills of women workers in the textile mills of northern England.
Prices range from £70 to £500. See her latest work in her gallery.

  1. My sister crochets such nice work but I've never see it done in glass! Beautiful!

  2. That is quite confusing but very beautiful! It would be so interesting to see her as she is working. Her pieces look so delicate and fragile.
