I was feeling fancy free since I was going on holiday and so I chose two shades of red, two shades of blue and a coppery brown - the thread is Fibers to Dye For in shades: Caper, Miss Peach, Miss Scarlet, Mayhem and Blue Murder. But I think this pattern would also look good stitched in more sombre shades. I suggest you pick out your 5 most favourite shades and bunch them tgether in your hand - if they look good together, then they will work on this piece. Often the stitchers of samplers on which these motifs are found would appear to pick a new shade almost at random when they had finished one thread. This is because on the motifs when transferred to an article for embellishing would have been stitched in white or monochrome. The colours used on the sampler are for ease of 'reading back' when the patterns are used later.
