Lucinda Ward Honstain (1820-1904) from Brooklyn made this appliquéd quilt, known as the
Reconciliation Quilt, in 1867. It is one of the highest valued quilts in existence fetching $264,000, at Sotheby’s in 1991. It depicts personal events in her life before, during, and just after the Civil War. The centre panel, which is a triple-wide block, shows her home in Williamsburg. This historically significant quilt will be on view at the New-York Historical Society, as part of the exhibition
Homefront & Battlefield: Quilts & Context in the Civil War. For more information about this exhibition,
