A little while ago we wrote about a fascinating book, Miao Embroidery from South West China by Ruth Smith in which she documents the needlework heritage of the Red People (so called because the Miao like to wear red). There are many items featuring cross stitch and Ruth has images showing the practice of Miao embroiderers to work their cross-stitch from the reverse of the fabric. They say the stitchers are able to work very deftly and quickly. Her book has almost a hundred pages crammed with colour images, embroidery details, patterns and diagrams.
I have a very nice, almost new, copy of this extremely hard to find book (Amazon com has a single copy for over $500) and you can purchase it now for $90 to include airmail shipping to wherever you are in the world.
I am sorry - this book has now been sold.
