Auction Roundup

David Lay in Penzance has two interesting items for sale today. The first is this William IV sampler with a detailed sailing ship, elaborate roses and thistles, and intials embellished with Holbein stitch. Worked by Margaret Doig it is dated 1834. Measuring 22ins. by 18ins. the estimate is £300 - £500.

The second item for auction with David Lay today is this 19th century needlework map of Europe, signed C. Earle. It is inscribed on the reverse - Sampler worked by Charlotte Earl (sic), Salisbury in the year 1818. How the world has changed! Here we can see there is no independent Finland or Greece - Italy extends into what is now Croatia on the Dalmatian coast and Turkey in Europe is a huge presence. Measuring 19ins. by 22ins. it has an estimate of £200 - £300 (GBP)

Semley Auctioneers in Shaftesbury, Dorset also have two items, intriguingly described as the property of 'a lady'. The first, Lot No 134, is an early 19th century darning sampler with decorative bird centre motif by Lucy Pudney worked in 1823 when she was aged 12. It measures 14.7 by 12.4ins. and has an estimate of £80 to £120

Mounted as a firescreen the second item, Lot 135,  from Semley Auctioneers is a verse sampler stitched in 1830 by Mary Lloyd. Measuring 21.7 by 20.2ins. it has an estimate of
£150 - £250.

  1. Love the fire place screen. I have a fire place screen very similiar to this just minus the sampler. Always thought about putting a large sampler in it. Thanks for the picture and historic info., I will have to start designing one.
