A Token Of My Love - Sarah Harris 1786

This is to be the next Needleprint project for you. Now in its final production stages it will be ready for release later next week. It is such a joyful piece with its exuberant patchwork of quite extraordinary medallions, some markedly Quaker, others quite new to the repertoire, that we just had to let it jump our whole production schedule. Stitched in 1786 by Sarah Harris somewhere in England, this sampler has a wealth of historical data. It celebrates the 30th anniversary in 1790 of George III's accession to the throne. There are jovial heraldic lions - one with a unicorn, and a queen in all her regalia.Worked over a period of time, Sarah has inscribed it: 'Love for Love 1799' and 'A Token of My Love to EG 1786'. Here you can see it in its entirety. Now in the Smithsonian Institute a bequest of Mrs. Henry E. Coe, it will be ready for you to purchase and download quick as a wink in PDF and JGG formats.

  1. OMG!!! I love it! Oh, I can't wait! I just finished reading a biography about Victoria and Albert -- I love reading about the Royals. This is right up my alley! Thank you for jumping production schedule on this one!

  2. Wow! This must be one of the most interesting samplers I've ever seen. I keep turning my head different ways to find little surprises in her motifs. Thank you Jacqueline for putting Susan Harris's work of art into your schedule with the new book and all. Oh, I cannot wait til next week across the pond, Dianne in Utah

  7. Oh Wow. I love pinks and I love the arts and crafts movement. Some of those motifs look so stylised. This is a must do for me. I can't wait to get the chart. Thanks for giving us access to another wonderful design.

  8. This is definitely a must have! Just a lovely piece of work...those pinks are calling to me too - not sure why, but pinks and reds are calling to me lately...mayhap it has to do with the changing of the seasons and getting away from the winter blahs and blues???

    Hugs,
    Jennifer

  9. What a beautiful sampler! How much planning do you think went into a project like this? Did Sarah have a master plan when she started? Did she work from one end to the other? Or did she place motifs willy nilly and then fit others in between as the space got more crowded? So much to think about! Thank you making this available to modern stitchers.

  10. I am so pleased you love this - it was a head over heels moment for me, too! I have never worked on anything quite like this. I don't think there was a master plan other than to cram as much as she could on her cloth. I am not even sure if she is copying the designs, the asymmetries and stitched over colours where she has changed her mind and worked a new colour over the old, suggest someone working out designs herself.... She seems to have worked all round the cloth with each edge facing her at some point. My guess is that she started with the two inscribed medallions at the top left - and then just threw caution to the wind - I'll come back and think about that some more.
