Swaledale is reknowned for its handknitting. Everyone, men, women and children would go about whatever work they had, but always with knitting needles in their hands. If you happened to meet a friend, then you might invite them to pause for six while you had a chat to catch up on news. Six was the period that it would take to knit six rows. When we were looking for sources of some of the Ackworth medallions, Swaledale was where we came. Now that autumn is closing in, you might like to knit some Swaledale Muffatees (hand warmers) as a comforting present. The curator of Reeth Museum, Helen Bainbridge, and Kate Trusson make a gift to you of the pattern for these muffatees from the Museum collection. Click here for a PDF download. What would be lovely is if someone could go on to devise a pattern for Quaker muffatees....could you?
